There’s going to be a party in Wausau tonight. The Newman Catholic Fighting Cardinals captured the first championship in school history by defeating McDonell Central Catholic 66-54 in the Division 5 title game today at the Kohl Center in Madison.
Newman never trailed and steadily built an insurmountable 14 point lead by halftime. The Macks had one last rally in them as Eddie Mittermeyer completed a 4 point play to pull McDonell within 46-44 at the 7:54 mark. He would finish with 17 and Canan Huss put up 28 but the rest of the team managed only 9 points as the Macks finished with a record of 29-2.
Newman was led by Conner Krach with 21, Mason Prey added 18 and Issac Seidel scored 15. The Cardinals kept the Macs at bay by hitting 10 of 22 three point shots. Newman finished it’s gold ball winning season at 27-4 making the most of their first ever appearance in Madison.
