The Notre Dame Tritons girls basketball team became just the sixth team in state history to capture three straight state championships by defeating Pewaukee for the second consecutive year in the Division 2 title game at the Resch Center Saturday night. The Lady Tritons put up a marvelous performance in the 64-49 victory.
They made 9 of their first 11 shots from the floor, almost all layups with flawless offensive execution and held Pewaukee to just 17 first half points. The Pirates would get no closer than 12 the rest of the way. All five Notre Dame starters scored between 9 and 16 points, led by Gracie Grzesk with 16. Trista Fayta put up 13, Sydney Whitehouse had 12, Peyton Musial with 10 and the only senior on the roster, Hope Barington added 9. The team had 18 assists on 23 made buckets and they outrebounded Pewaukee 30-15. They are without question, one of the most complete, talented and well coached teams in Wisconsin.
For Head Coach Sarah Rhode, this makes five state championships in her 12 years at Notre Dame, having also won back to back titles in 2013 and 2014. They finished the year with 29 straight victories against just one loss, which was to Pewaukee in the first game of the season. It was the second straight year the Tritons began and ended the season against the Pirates and in back to back years, it ended with a gold ball.
Pewaukee was led by a terrific tandem of twins, Anna and Amy Terrian who scored 19 and 12 points and they are both only sophomores. Head Coach Jim Reuter said his girls competed hard but you need an “A” game to beat the Tritons and if you fall behind as they did, it takes an “A+ A+” effort. The Pirates finished 28-2 on the season.
So how good is Notre Dame? In their run of three straight titles, they’ve gone 86-3. They’ll lose only Barington off the roster and in the post-game press conference, Rhode said they’ll get back at it and start thinking about becoming the first team to make it 4 championships in a row.
Don’t put it past them.
