GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Icebreaking is set to resume on the waters of Green Bay next week.
The U.S. Coast Guard says the shipping channel will open at 7 a.m. Tuesday. Cutters Mackinaw and Neah Bay are set to arrive in the northern part of the bay through the Rock Island Passage late Monday afternoon.
Later in the week, icebreaking operations are set to expand to Escanaba, Marinette-Menominee and finally the Sturgeon Bay Ship Canal.
The Coast Guard says ice is deteriorating with the increased amount of sunlight as spring approaches.
Snowmobilers, ATV operators, people ice fishing and other recreational users are asked to be careful, especially near charted navigation areas.
