WASHINGTON, D. C. (WTAQ-WLUK) – With Republican congressman Glenn Grothman saying he’s looking for a sixth term, some Republicans are singing his praises while Democrats say he’s going back on his promises.
The sixth district representative originally pledged to serve a maximum of 10 years in the position. That’s where he’ll be at the end of his current term.
As Grothman nears a decade in D.C., he’s already looking ahead to the future.
“I think he knows how to make a difference, so I think it’s important he’s running again,” said Wisconsin Republican Party Chairman Brian Schimming.
Schimming said it’s not wrong or uncommon for a politician to go back on a term limit pledge. He added that he thinks Grothman’s tenure has been a successful one.
“Glenn Grothman is probably one of the hardest working members of congress I’ve ever met in my life. He’s helped raise the profile of big government spending. Certainly in the last two years, he’s been talking a lot about the southern border. That is an issue that voters are very, very concerned about.”
Wisconsin Democratic Party Communications Director Joe Oslund believes the last four-plus terms have been anything but a success.
“I think he has some views that are pretty out there and a manner that’s frankly embarrassing to people. But I don’t think there’s been anything spectacular accomplished.”
The announcement, specifically given the term limit pledge from 2014, has not been received positively by Democrats across the state.
“Obviously, he’s now going back against that word,” Oslund said. “But it’s not really surprising to see that. It’s kind of what we saw from Senator Johnson. Everyone loves to make promises about term limits until they themselves are term limited.”
The last time a Democrat represented the district was in 1967. Schimming feels fortunate that Republicans have been able to maintain that level of control.
“We have held it for a long time because those Republicans who have represented it have reflected the views and the values of that district,” Schimming said. “The voters of that area of the state know what they want in a congressman, and that has been Glenn Grothman.”
Grothman has won the district by double digits in every election in which he’s faced a challenger.
