MADISON, WI (WTAQ) – County executives could no longer serve in the state Legislature at the same time, under a bill that’s up for a Senate hearing Wednesday afternoon.
GOP Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald introduced the bill just two days ago, so he could try and pass it in the final weeks of the session.
Democratic Senate candidate Mark Harris, the Winnebago County executive, says the bill is aimed at him because he would have to leave the county post before he could take the Senate seat.
Fitzgerald says it’s wrong for officials to collect two paychecks at the same time — but Harris says Fitzgerald didn’t say a word when Republican Paul Farrow briefly held his Senate post after being elected as the Waukesha County executive.
Harris also points to Bob Ziegelbauer, who served six years in both the Assembly and the Manitowoc County executive’s office.
