Firefighters battle a fire in Gresham Feb. 23, 2023. PC: Fox 11 Online
GRESHAM, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A man is displaced after a fire broke out in his Gresham apartment.
Firefighters were called to an upstairs apartment on Main Street around 3:45 a.m. Thursday.
The fire originated in the upstairs attic of the apartment.
Gresham Fire chief Andy Schmidt, says the occupant was home at the time of the fire and was able to get out safely. He is being assisted by the Red Cross.
Schmidt says the weather and where the fire was in the attic made it difficult to put the fire out.
Crews eventually had to bring in an aerial ladder to put the flames out after the roof started to cave in.
Below the apartment is an old hardware store with a laundry mat and a food pantry. Schmidt says those businesses appear to only have water damage, with the smoke and fire damage contained to the upstairs apartment.
The cause of the fire is not known and Schmidt expects crews to be on scene until later Thursday afternoon, putting out hotspots.
Schmidt estimates seven or eight area fire departments were called into help.
