MADISON, Wis (Wisconsin Radio Network) – Madison police haven’t had much luck with witnesses to a fatal shooting outside a west side bar. “‘Snitches get stitches.’ We’ve got to abandon that axiom,” said Chief Mike Koval. “In order for us to take hold . . . of gun violence in this community, we need all hands on deck. Everybody has to be helpful and helping one another.”
That doesn’t appear to be happening, though, as investigators sort through the chain of events that led to an exchange of gunfire that left a 30-year-old man dead. The Dane County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the dead man as Martez Moore of Madison.
Moore was shot at about 1:00 a.m. outside Martin O’Grady’s Irish Pub. Koval said some of the people his officers have questioned have prior contact with law enforcement or known gang ties.
Koval said about 15 to 20 people had entered the bar earlier on Monday evening, and that about half of the group went into the parking lot prior to shots being exchanged. A second man was treated for non life-threatening injuries after being found in a car near the scene.
Investigators recovered shell casings in the parking lot from at least two different weapons, and also seized a vehicle for evidence. No one is in custody. “A lot of people here ‘don’t know nothing about nothing,’” Koval said.
