OCONTO, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Some church-goers in Oconto are saying goodbye to their place of worship.
The “Holy Trinity Catholic Parish” had its final Mass Sunday morning in a church that has been in use since 1876.
Two Catholic parishes had been in Oconto until 1996 when they combined and became the “Holy Trinity Parish.”
Fr. Joel Sember of Holy Trinity Catholic Parish tells FOX 11 the process to build a new church has been years in the making.
“Since I’ve been here, about eight-and-a-half years have been talking about it, and it was really about four-and-a-half years that we’ve really, as a parish community, came to the decision. This is the right step to build a new church, to build it here in town on this property.”
Pieces of the old church will be re-used in the new church.
The dedication for the new church will be next week.
