GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – A Water main break on the 700 block of Gray Street Sunday is a reminder that crews need to be ready to respond.
With colder temperatures, the ground freezes, opening the possibility for a water main break.
“We know that when the temperatures drop, the ground freezes, the soil expands and it has been really cold lately.”
Andrea Hay with Green Bay City Water Utility says crews are prepared to respond.
“This time of year we are on high alert. We have crews on call and we are just ready for it.”
It is also important for homeowners to prevent having frozen pipes.
“If your pipes are on an outside wall, put some insulation between that outside wall and the pipe.”
Green Bay Water Utility monitors the water flow all day long.
“We do have a person who monitors water flow 24-hours a day. Once in a while, that person can see that there has been a break.”
Green Bay City Water Utility has also posted a video with tips on how to keep your pipes from freezing. You can find that video by clicking here.
