MADISON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – In his first State of the State Address, Governor Tony Evers is expected to hit on many topics that carried him to victory from the campaign trail.
Evers’ address is tonight at 7 p.m. from the State Assembly chambers in Madison.
“It’s not about talking about new things,” said Lt. Gov. Mandela Barnes.
“It’s about continuing the themes over the last several months that people have been hearing. Now is the time to bring that vision to fruition.”
Barnes says some of the topics Evers will talk about include education, healthcare, and criminal justice reform.
“I think we’re going to get a State of the State that really reflects what the people of Wisconsin want,” said State Rep. Staush Gruszynski (D-Green Bay).
This will be Gruszynski’s first State of the State as a member of the Assembly. He tells FOX 11 that he’s hoping Evers will discuss clean drinking water protections.
“I’ve personally been following the groundwater contamination issues that we’ve seen up in Marinette, my hometown, as well as there was just a study released in southwest Wisconsin where 40 percent of the wells in that area were contaminated.”
“I would hope he’ll talk about workforce development, talk about healthcare, talk about some of the things that we can do in terms of making smart infrastructure investments in the future,” said State Sen. Andre Jacque (R-De Pere).
Jacque doesn’t expect to hear great detail of Evers’ plans. He expects that will be saved for the governor’s budget address.
“We haven’t had necessarily a lot of the opportunity really to talk to him face-to-face, so I’ll be going over to the Governor’s residence after the address and hopefully have a chance to talk to him then as well.”
Evers has asked to deliver his budget address on March 5th.
