GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – The Salvation Army of Greater Green Bay is opening their doors this winter to make sure everyone has an opportunity to escape from the cold.
Major snowfall throughout the area is the top concern right now, but meteorologists are warning the public that the snowfall will be replaced with bitterly cold temperatures close to zero starting by Friday.
If you don’t have a reliable option to stay warm the Salvation Army wants to help out.
“When the temperatures or wind chills get right around the zero-degree mark we don’t want to see anyone hurting that way,” says Captain Matthew O’Neil with the Greater Green Bay Salvation Army.
He says they offer a warming center that is open to the public daily.
“Our warming center is at 626 Union Court,” he explains. “Usually we open up the doors around 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.”
The whole idea is to offer a free shelter during the day for individuals that might not have reliable housing or are forced to brave the elements.
“So you’re able to come in, stay warm, we’ll provide coffee, different things like that,” says Captain O’Neil.
As of right now, their daily hours are being offered during the week Monday through Friday.
“At this time,” he says. “We’ll review cases as they come.”
He adds that the potential for hours to be expanded will exist if temperatures linger around zero degrees or below for an extended amount of time.
Those looking to take advantage of this service need not call ahead to reserve availability.
Rather, the organization says they are simply opening their doors this winter to help anyone in need.
“We will fit as many as we can,” says Captain O’Neil. “As many as allowed by our building.”
