GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – The winter cold is opening the door for a common scam, and the Better Business Bureau says it is back again.
Utility companies are warning that scammers are attempting to get money from their customers.
“They will contact you and say that they are from your local utility company and that you are past due on your bill so you need to pay now or you will be disconnected.”
Susan Bach of the Better Business Bureau says Wisconsin Public Service sent out a warning reminding customers not to fall for the scam.
She says there are three big things that should stand out.
“You are going to get several bills and statements in writing in the mail before they would ever call you. They would never ask for payment with a prepaid credit card or debit card and they are never going to cut off people in the winter anyway.”
She says that is because we are currently in winter moratorium.
“We know that your local utility company just does not behave that way.”
Those who get these calls should contact their utility company.
“The name of the person calling you, what was displayed on your caller ID.”
Bach says most importantly, do not give out any personal information or banking information over the phone.
