GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – A city council committee met last night to discuss Alderman Randy Scannell’s plan to fine Green Bay bartenders for drinking on the job.
Scannell says fining any on-duty bartender or server who is caught drinking would be a step in the right direction. Other municipalities have similar ordinances.
Neenah has a policy where only the bartender is fined. In La Crosse, a violation could result in both the bartender and owner getting in trouble.
Community members shared their opinions at tonight’s meeting.
Don Mjelde, Brown County Tavern League President said, “If there was a problem with sober serving in Green Bay, I would consider the legislation you’re bringing forth today. But bartenders and bar owners are working well with law enforcement in this area. The direction the relationship is going is clearly visible. This could turn our progress in the opposite direction.”
But there was also some support for the idea. “We need to do something to set limits, to have this discussion to ensure the individuals who are providing this mind-altering substance are in their right mind. It doesn’t take much alcohol to affect our ability to make good decisions.”
After Monday night’s discussion, the committee decided against taking any action on the proposal.
