OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The Oshkosh Area School District is one step closer to naming its new elementary school.
The board of education voted Wednesday night about the name of the new school, which will be replacing the current Webster Stanley Elementary and Middle School building.
After an initial round of suggestions and then a public advisory vote, the most popular name was Menominee. The runner-up was Webster Stanley, with Jessie Jack Hooper coming in third and Poberezny in fourth.
By moving forward with the name Menominee Elementary School, the board said it felt like it was honoring the community’s 4,000-plus people who voted on the school’s name. But they also wanted to honor the wishes of the tribe that the school was being named after.
The new name was unanimously approved by the board but only after the motion was amended to make the naming contingent on receiving approval from the Menominee tribe.
The tribe has suggested the district bring the matter to the Menominee Language and Culture Committee for approval; from there, it would be taken up by Tribal Legislature.
The Menominee Language and Culture Committee has said it can add the district to the agenda for its Feb. 2 meeting.
