GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – Mass shootings at two mosques in New Zealand is affecting people close to home.
After hearing the news of 49 people killed and dozens injured in the shooting, Green Bay Police will be increasing security at Green Bay’s Mosque.
Chief Andrew Smith met with Islamic Faith leaders Friday to offer support and understanding.
“I think there is a general feeling of sadness for what happened. It is just a terrible tragedy and I think everyone here in Green Bay is feeling it.”
Green Bay Police are assigning extra patrol for the time being.
Chief Smith says he is saddened that they have to take this kind of action.
“Someone that goes into a place of worship and kills unarmed people because of their beliefs. I don’t think it gets any worse than that.”
Chief Smith calls it a despicable crime, perpetrated by evil people and a vile act of cowardice.
He says he feels times have changed and no place is immune from a tragedy like this occurring.
“Thirty years ago, I never would have thought of bringing my firearm to church, but it is something that I do now.”
He says the Police will do everything they can to keep the people of Green Bay safe.
