MARINETTE, WI (WTAQ) – It’s been a long time coming, but Marinette Sheriff Jerry Sauve says they have made an arrest in a double homicide that took place nearly 43 years ago.
With the help of new technology and a DNA match, Sauve says they were able to arrest 82-year-old Raymond Vannieuwenhoven in connection with the death of David Schuldes and rape and death of Ellen Matheys.
“We finally obtained a DNA sample from a suspect who turned out to be our arrestee.
The arrest was made Thursday in Lakewood.
Sauve says they hired a company that offered new technology to come up with updated sketches and work with DNA to find matches.
He says they worked together with the company giving leads and the Sheriff’s Office conducting interviews and investigations until they had an identity of a suspect.
“From the full profile, they could start telling us the origin of the person and surnames and eventually we were given names of people to start working with and being able to rule people out.”
Suave said that Vannieuwenhoven did not seem surprised when he was arrested, but there is still a lot of investigation to go.
“I think we are building a compelling case and we will continue to work on that and we will be meeting with our District Attorney.”
New sketches of what the suspect may look like were released last summer.
David Schuldes, 25, and Ellen Matheys, 24 were shot to death in 1976 at McClintock Park in Silver Cliff. Matheys was also sexually assaulted.
