BROWN CO, WI (WTAQ) – Gov. Tony Evers has declared a statewide state of emergency in Wisconsin, while Brown County Executive Troy Streckenbach has issued a disaster declaration for flooding in the county and Green Bay Mayor Jim Schmitt declared a state of emergency on the city’s east side.
Howard Village President Burt McIntyre also signed a disaster declaration for the village.
A quick melt of snow and ice, combined with rain in recent days, has led rivers to back up and spill over their banks.
The state of emergency directs state agencies, including the Wisconsin National Guard, to provide people and resources to help emergency response and recovery efforts.
“Many residents and communities across our state have been responding to flooding that has impacted homes, businesses, and cities and towns across Wisconsin,” Evers said in a news release.
“The warm temperatures and rain the last few days have caused much of the heavy snowpack and ice to melt resulting in flooding, ice jams, and rivers and creeks to rise. I would like to thank all the first responders who have been helping those in need.”
The county declaration asks for county assistance and requests county leaders to advise the state of the conditions.
In Green Bay, those affected by the flooding can call the City Inspections Division at (920) 448-3300 to schedule an inspection of their property after the flood water has receded.
Widespread flooding in many areas of the county has led to flooded streets, basements and fields. Some people have had to be evacuated from their homes. The flooding closed roads and led leaders in Allouez to ask residents to not use running water.
For those whose homes are affected by the flooding, U-Haul is offering 30 days of free self-storage and U-Box container usage to flood victims.
