GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – The emergency evacuation for the East River has been lifted by the Green Bay Metro Fire Department as of 10 a.m. on Sunday.
They suggest property owners in the affected areas should call 920-448-3300 to contact building inspectors for a life safety home inspections. The fire department also suggests that the property owners of any condemned buildings should be accompanied by building inspectors before entering.
The bridge over East River at Mason Street will continue to remain closed until an inspection can take place.
The CDC and FEMA recommends these tips:
- If you were evacuated, try to return to your home during the daytime so that you do not have to use any lights. Use battery-powered flashlights and lanterns, rather than candles, gas lanterns, or torches.
- Be aware of the risk of electrocution. Do NOT touch electrical equipment if it is wet or if you are standing in water.
- If it is safe to do so, turn off the electricity to prevent electric shock. If you must enter standing water to access the main power switch, STOP and call an electrician to turn it off. NEVER enter standing water to access the main power switch, turn power on or off, or use an electric tool or appliance while standing in water.
- Have an electrician check the house’s electrical system before turning the power on again.
- If you smell gas or suspect a leak, leave your house immediately then call 9-1-1. Do not return until you are told it is safe to do so.
- If the house has been closed up for several days, enter briefly to open doors and windows to let the house air out for at least 30 minutes before you stay for any length of time.
- If your home has been flooded and has been closed up for several days, assume your home has mold.
- If your home has been flooded, it also may be contaminated with sewage.
The Green Bay Metro Fire Department encourages you to be aware that if your electrical and plumbing components, structural integrity, and/or HVAC (furnace) are compromised, your house is not fit to live in.
Do not stay in the home if any of these systems are not functioning properly.
