GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – Spring Break in Green Bay means it’s time for Basketball for Police and the Boys and Girls Club.
Bringing badges and youth together, the Green Bay Boys and Girls Club hosted BY05 games Monday.
18-year-old Demetrius Webster was one of those kids. He says it’s unique to see officers do something like this.
“It shows that they care and that they want to get involved with the youth.
Officer Darryl Robinson says officers train for endurance, but this was a different kind of effort, and it was tough.
“It’s fast-paced in a short amount to time. The cardio we are getting is not going to last as long. They have age on us and are younger, but you can’t leave them open because they are going to shoot it in your face and make it.”
Webster says the kids are younger, quicker and can outrun the older guys.
“They are not going to give up, they are coming hard every play so it is good competition.
In the end, the kids beat the cops, but the game ended with smiles as the event supports a fun, safe environment that promotes core values and a relationship that can last for a long time.
“I think they get a joy out of it.”
Green Bay Police Commander Kevin Warych says the idea is the interaction.
“We want to provide a pace for kids to come and meet the officers while on Spring Break. We want all kids to see police officers as who they are and we use basketball to make that connection.
The event is put on by the Green Bay Police Department, The Boys and Girls Club, and the Divine Temple Church.
