FOND DU LAC, WI (WTAQ) – Fond du Lac County will keep its half-cent sales tax.
The county actually enacted the tax in 2010 as part of an incentive package to keep Mercury Marine’s plant open after the company threatened to move.
It was set to expire in 2021.
The board voted 23-0 this week to keep the sales tax in place, with the proceeds to be used for county purposes.
Supervisors also endorsed the idea of distributing $1 million of the proceeds each year to municipalities, but that would be up to future County Boards to decide.
The county held several meetings in recent months to get feedback about the future of the tax.
According to the Wisconsin Department of Revenue, 66 of the state’s 72 counties have the half-cent tax.
Those without the tax are Manitowoc, Menominee, Outagamie, Racine, Waukesha, and Winnebago counties.
