FOND DU LAC, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — One of the dogs in the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Office is probably getting some extra treats after having his first large drug arrest.
The office’s newest dog, Rip, helped bring in approximately a pound of marijuana and cocaine during a traffic stop on Interstate 41 Wednesday night.
A deputy, and K9 handler, was patrolling the interstate shortly after 7 p.m. Wednesday when he noticed an equipment violation on a vehicle traveling northbound. The deputy stopped the vehicle on the Hickory Street off-ramp and found a 35-year-old man and 30-year-old woman, both from Wisconsin Rapids, in the car.
He deployed his dog, Rip, for an “open air sniff” of the vehicle during the stop.
Rip alerted the deputy of illegal drugs in the vehicle, and after searching the vehicle, deputies found a pound of cocaine and marijuana.
The sheriff’s office said that while a deputy was arresting the man, he became extremely agitated and pulled away from deputies. While the struggle continued, a deputy brought Rip out of the squad car again, which then made the man more cooperative, according to the sheriff. The man was then taken into custody without further incident.
The man and woman are both facing charges of possession with intent to distribute cocaine, possession with intent to distribute THC and maintaining a drug trafficking place. The man was also charged with resisting an officer and was placed on probation hold.
He is currently on probation for previous convictions of possessing cocaine and THC with intent to distribute.
The investigation remains ongoing.
