GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – A Green Bay woman will be paying more than half a million dollars in restitution after being sentenced for preparing false income tax returns.
47-year-old Catalina Taboada was sentenced to 21 months in prison and will pay $571,800 in restitution to the Internal Revenue Service.
Taboada started her own tax preparation business called Taboada & Associated in Green Bay in 2009, according to prosecutors.
In the plea agreement, she admitted to committing fraud in many ways at her own tax preparation business.
That includes fraudulently claimed child tax credits for clients whose children lived outside the U.S., as well as claimed child tax credits for clients’ nieces, nephews, and other distant family members.
Taboada claims to have done her actions to “stimulate the economy” and admitted that she knew what she was doing was wrong.
