GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – The Fox River Cleanup Project is underway in Brown County. And the longtime effort to remove harmful materials from the river bottom is in the home stretch.
Project spokesman Scott Stein says the is year number 11, and final year, for removing PCB’s from the bed of the Fox River.
“Over the stretch of the first ten years of the project about 5.4 million cubic yards has been dredged.”
It’s part of a campaign to clean some of the environmental damages caused by industries along the river.
“That sediment goes through a de-watering and de-sanding process before what’s left is taken to the landfill.”
Buoys and markers are once again in place to mark the areas where the clean-up equipment is being used.
“You’ll see the barges there in operation. Probably going right up to November.”
Those using the river for boating, fishing or other recreational purposes are urged to use caution and pay close attention to the signs that mark the dredging and spreader barges, booster pumps, pipelines, and other cleanup equipment.
