GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – A competency exam was ordered on Wednesday for the Green Bay man that is accused of stabbing K9 officer Pyro.
30-year-old Sai Vang faces three charges, including a felony charge of causing injury to a police animal.
The court commissioner forwarded the case Wednesday to a circuit court judge.
Vang will return to court on Monday where a judge likely will formally order the competency exam.
The psychiatric review does not address his mental state at the time of the incident, but rather determines if Vang understands the proceedings and can assist in his own defense.
According to the criminal complaint, both police and family members have said Vang has mental issues and has been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia.
On April 7, police were called to a west-side home because Vang was threatening to kill his father.
Police released Pyro to engage Vang since he refused to surrender.
Vang pulled a knife out of his waistband and stabbed Pyro after the dog bit him.
According to the criminal complaint, an officer then used a taser on Vang and he was taken into custody.
The complaint states that during questioning Vang repeatedly apologized for stabbing Pyro but said “he stabbed the dog on instinct, because he is scared of dogs.”
Following two surgeries, Pyro returned back home this past weekend.
