BERLIN, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Police and school leaders are looking into a video posted to Facebook of an apparent fight at Berlin High School.
The video appears to show one student hitting another student in the head repeatedly. After the second student falls to the ground, the first student appears to move toward stomping on his head, when the camera turns away.
Berlin police say the fight happened around noon Thursday.
“High School Administration was immediately made aware of the incident and is working with the Berlin Police Department to ensure that the matter is thoroughly investigated. Upon completion, this matter will be referred to the Green Lake County District Attorney’s Office,” the department said in a statement.
Some students are outraged that no one helped in the video.
“I would have at least gotten a teacher, something, they literally did nothing,” said Hannah Phelps, a Berlin High School student.
Phelps said she was at the cafeteria during the fight, but didn’t see it.
“I know he can fight back but he was too afraid of the consequences,” she said.
Phelps is neighbors with the student who got hit.
“He said he was okay, but he was crying and he didn’t come to school today.”
Phelps told FOX 11, the student seen throwing punches was suspended, however, the district did not confirm that information.
Parents on Facebook were also filled with rage at the video.
Some said, “This is totally unacceptable.” However, others suggest that people need to know the “whole story, not just what was filmed.”
The school district also released a statement, which read:
The Berlin School District takes this incident very seriously and is working cooperatively with local law enforcement in its investigation so appropriate disciplinary action can be taken. Because this involves minors, we cannot comment further nor provide identification of the two students involved.
It is important for the public to know that this is not who we are as a district nor is it reflective of the vast majority of our students who care about each other and about their education.
