SHIOCTON, WI (WTAQ) – The start of sturgeon spawning is approaching
It will take a little warmer water, but Ryan Koenigs of the DNR says activity should start in days.
“Typically sturgeon will start spawning when water temperatures start reaching 52 to 57 degrees. We are probably going to see some spawning activity by midweek, at least at lower sites like Shiocton and New London.”
That’s where the spawn watch begins for onlookers, it ends in Shawano.
Last year was a quick and late season.
“Last year was an odd year,” said Koenigs. “Fish ended up spawning in late April which is a bit later than when they normally spawn.”
He says this year, high waters may cause some issues.
“The water levels are high at the Wolf River and some of the water levels are going to be up to the bank or potentially over the bank. With really high water, it can make fish hard to see from the bank and make the fish less visible to spectators.”
Updates on the spawning schedule will be released as soon as they see some pre-spawning activity.
