FOND DU LAC, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A working smoke alarm helped residents of a Fond du Lac home get out safely during a kitchen fire.
Just before 10:30 a.m. Thursday, crews were dispatched to 646 Ledgeview Blvd. for a reported fire in a garbage can in the kitchen of the home.
The homeowner used a fire extinguisher prior to crews arrival.
The first arriving unit extinguished the smoldering material and removed debris.
The cause of the fire was determined to be improperly discarded smoking materials.
Fond du Lac Fire Rescue reminds residents when discarding smoking or other smoldering material to ensure the products discarded are in a suitable container outside the home and only after confirming they are fully extinguished.
This is also a good time for homeowners to check their smoke alarms to ensure they are working.
Fond du Lac Fire Rescue will be adding a red bulb to the wreaths at each of its fire stations as part of its Keep the Wreath Green holiday campaign.
