SHAWANO, WI (WTAQ) – The sturgeon spawning season continues in late April as the prehistoric fish have made their way to the farthest point up the Wolf River they can go, the dam at Sturgeon Park in Shawano.
The sidewalks are normally filled with spectators each year, but Shawano Parks and Rec Director Matt Hendricks says high water on the River is an issue when it comes to good viewing.
“We are just waiting for the water to go back down, it is still up on the sidewalk and it is some of the highest water levels at this point since the 1920s.”
But with water levels they haven’t seen in almost a century, Hendricks has had to put tape up to signify what areas of the trail are off limits for now.
“We do have damage to the dock and so we want to just check the sidewalk and make sure it hasn’t been undercut and make sure it is safe and we will get people back down here as soon as we can.”
The spawning season and a chance to see the sturgeon up close is expected to last into the weekend.
“My understanding is that we are about a day or two away from peak yet.”
