APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Blood donors gave the gift of life Monday during the Community Blood Center’s fifth annual holiday blood drive.
With over 200 time slots available, the annual event is the center’s second largest of the year — only beat by the summer’s M.A.S.H. blood drive.
Mike Domask, the center’s recruitment manager, explained that it’s a tough time of year to recruit donors, though, with all of the travel, weather and illnesses that come with the winter months.
“With last week’s winter weather and of course being between holiday weekends, it can be a very challenging time to collect blood,” said Domask. “We ask that all donors that are healthy and eligible to donate, come and join us immediately.”
The Community Blood Center provides blood to more than 40 local hospitals.
Domask says there’s a critical blood shortage going on. All blood types are welcome, especially O- donors — the universal blood type.
Domask explains that donating blood is a simple process. Donors can schedule an appointment online. During their donation slot, they provide a pint of blood, potentially saving three lives, and the process generally only lasts up to an hour.

Donors received a free long-sleeve t-shirt for their donations Monday. The shirts will be available to donors through Jan. 15.
