OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Cities are preparing for snow and cold and what’s to come later in the week.
Public works departments have been keeping a close eye on the forecast from the National Weather Service and are ready to take action whenever.
With it being a holiday weekend, they know they’re going to need to be proactive, but the upcoming snow and cold temperatures present some challenges for both those workers and those who plan to be on the roads this weekend.
The impending winter storm could have an impact on those with weekend travel plans.
“It’s just going to be a tough travel timeframe for this Christmas holiday I’m afraid,” said Oshkosh Public Works Director James Rabe.
Rabe tells FOX 11 the upcoming holidays won’t be stopping the Oshkosh Public Works Department from getting crews on the road.
“When people sign up for this type of a position, they know they’re going to have to come in when the weather dictates it. So, even though Friday is an observed holiday for us, we’ll be calling people in to execute a full snowplow if that’s what the weather gives us.”
Rabe and his team have been busy discussing a game plan for the storm. With two separate snowfalls and cold temperatures expected, there are several challenges to consider.
“We’ll be getting out as quickly as we can to get as much cleared as possible before the temperatures drop because once those temperatures drop, salt is useless. Typical road salt — sodium chloride — it’s only got a functional temperature of about 15 degrees.”
Fox Valley residents like Emily Bricco have been monitoring the forecast as well so she can change any travel plans if necessary.
“If it’s as bad as they’re saying, we might just stay close. Especially with a new baby, we don’t want to be stuck in any sort of snowstorm or in the ditch or anything.”
But others, like Jake Stumpner, have simply gotten used to forecasts like these.
“It’s Wisconsin, like kind of always expect it. When I think of snowstorm, Wisconsin, I think of ice flurries. I kind of expect it all.”
Bricco is also used to the Wisconsin winters, so she wants to offer some advice for those dealing with traffic.
“Give yourself a lot of distance. That’s the biggest thing. Take your time, no rushing. Especially with the holidays, everyone wants to get to where they need to be.”
The Oshkosh Public Works Department has now completely made the transition into the snow clearing season.
“All the equipment is available for us and ready to go,” said Rabe.
The department has 24-hour crews during the week who are out on the roads and constantly monitoring the weather, so they will be ready to respond to whatever mother nature brings.
