SHEBOYGAN, WI (WHBL) – The Department of Natural Resources is urging people to take a trip to some public lands this fall, and even for Labor Day weekend.
Wildlife biologist Tim Lizotte says getting out in nature is something everyone can enjoy. “By being forward looking and preserving these places, it makes sure that all of our citizens and generations can come can enjoy them for public recreation really regardless of their income level or social status.” The Department has been promoting the use of public lands through a new online atlas that shows updated lists of where people can go and what people can do there.
The jewels of the department are, of course, the State Parks system. Lizotte says we’re lucky enough to have one of the most unique parks right here in Sheboygan, Kohler Andrae State Park. “It’s an absolutely beautiful place to recreate. You can hike for miles along the shore, there’s a place you can take your dog on a short stretch of the beach there. It’s really that unique dune ecosystem there and it’s hard to find something like that that’s pretty much undeveloped.”
Hunters looking for a new patch of land to hunt deer, waterfowl or game birds can also make use of the new online resources as well. There’s the Pocket Ranger app for both iOS and Android devices, as well as the online FFLIGHT gamebird location program. You can find out more online at http://dnr.wi.gov
