WISCONSIN RAPIDS, Wis (WSAU) — The “World Water Ski Show Tournament” comes to Wisconsin Rapids starting Friday night and running through the weekend.
Maggie Moleski is one of the event organizers and says it features the top five water ski show teams in the world, including the U.S. team which is ranked No. 1 in the world heading into this weekend’s competition.
According to Moleski, “We have five international teams coming in. We have Australia, Belgium, Canada, China, and the U.S.A.”
So how did a worldwide competition end up in Wisconsin Rapids? Moleski says Wisconsin Rapids was a natural choice since the Wisconsin Rapids Aqua Skiers have hosted statewide ski championships for half a century, and that’s turned into ‘the largest ski show tournament in the world.’
“We’re nothing new to hosting tournaments. We host the world’s largest water ski show tournament. This past year was the 50th annual, so we’ve been doing it for 50 years,” said Moleski. “It’s nothing new to us to set up and host the tournament. It’s just that this tournament – this international tournament – is a little different with the logistics of it.”
The event runs Friday through Sunday at Red Sands Beach in South Wood County Park. The tournament grounds and concessions open Friday night at 4:00 with the opening ceremony beginning at 5:30.
