GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – Wisconsin’s senior U.S. Senator says Attorney General William Barr has done his job — now it’s time for everyone to move on.
At a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on Wednesday, Attorney General William Barr said the evidence gathered by special counsel Robert Mueller was not sufficient to prove that the president obstructed justice.
“There job is over, the investigation has run its course,” explains Senator Johnson. “Democrats just don’t like the fact that there wasn’t collusion or conspiracy between the Trump campaign and Russia.”
Johnson joined the Join Muir Show on Thursday to discuss the controversial report and Attorney General William Barr’s handling of the process.
He says at this time, the American public shouldn’t be continuing to question the notion of possible wrongdoing from the President, but rather turn their attention to others in the government.
“What type of wrong doing occured in the campaign, in the transition, on the part of certain FBI agents or people operating in the Department of Justice,” he says.
Many have called Attorney General Barr’s findings skewed and claimed he’s nothing more than another crony operating under President Trump’s influence.
Senator Johnson says that notion couldn’t be farther from the truth, in his opinion.
“Well he came across as a very serious lawyer, a very highly respected former Attorney General, who is applying the law as he interprits it,” he explains.
He says the focus shouldn’t be on Barr’s reluctance to exonerate the President, because it simply isn’t the job of the Justice Department to do so.
With that in mind, he’s looking for the process to come to an end.
“Attorney General Barr I think came to the right conclusion,” he says. “This thing ought to be over.”
For him, it’s still unbelievable to try and grasp how the probe has advanced to this stage.
“How did an investigation, a counter intelligence investigation, get instituted against the campaign of the opposing parties presidential candidate?” he asks. “How did that occur?”
