GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – Spring cleaning is being recommended for more than just your home.
“You may be thinking about cleaning out your closet, but it may also be a good idea to clean out your digital profile as well.”
Susan Bach of the Better Business Bureau says it is like hitting reset or starting over.
“It is a good time to clean out your excess files or trash files on your computer. Make sure you are doing regular backups of your data and updating your system and software files as well.”
A key part of that is changing passwords on your accounts. She says the first thing is to make sure you have secure and strong passwords.
“You can use a unique sentence because that is easy to remember,” Bach said. She added that you can make passwords more secure by using characters that replace letters. “You can use the number 3 for the letter E or the number zero key for the letter O.” She says there are many options for using look-alike keys.
The Better Business Bureau says it is also important to avoid having the same password for everything. Bach says to keep you from forgetting your passwords, it is recommended to write them down somewhere, but avoid leaving that list by your computer or devices.
The Better Business Bureau also expresses the importance of having double authentication that requires two forms of identification for your accounts or signing up for biometrics like face scans and finger scans before gaining access to the accounts is a great way to keep your accounts secure.
