BROWN COUNTY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Usually water from the Suamico river makes it’s way east, and empties into the bay.
But on Sunday, that wasn’t the case.
“It was up to the back of my car and it was up over the banks,” said James Miller. “This whole road was flooded from down there all the way up to the boat landings.”
Miller has lived in Suamico for more than 30 years. He tells FOX 11 the morning’s flooding is an unusual sight.
“I have never seen the water this high ever.”
Flood warnings had been issued for different parts of Brown County for the same reason.
“Along the west edge of the bay in Suamico and basically our deputies have been watching throughout the night last night and the day today for potential flood zones,” explained Brown County Sheriff’s Lt. John Bain.
High winds paired with rain showers brought this kind of weather to Suamico residents, like Miller, as the water pushed back against the west edge of the bay.
“So, I took a couple of pictures and I sent them to my dad and my cousin and I’m like, ‘look at this’. They’re like yeah I’ve never seen that before.”
Flood warnings lead to a voluntary evacuation for the area of Sunset Beach Road and Sunset Beach Lane in Suamico.
Officials say at least two houses cleared out after that call.
Now, Bain says deputies are keeping watch over other areas that could flood.
“Obviously the East River is high and we don’t expect that to go down anytime soon. So any area along the East River and tributaries are potential flood zones.”
That leaves Bain with one piece of advice for people on the roads.
“Drivers just need to be very careful as far as crossing high waters. We don’t need to see anybody get that water in their engine, and wreck an auto, and then get stranded so we have to send other people in harm’s way to rescue them.”
Most of the high waters and flood warnings were issued Sunday morning.
But as the day went on, water levels continued to go down.
