MARINETTE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Tyco believes connecting Peshtigo’s residents to Marinette’s existing public water supply is the best way to provide clean drinking water to areas with contaminated wells.
Tyco Fire Products makes firefighting foam. Chemicals have spread off its campus, and dozens of wells in the area have tested positive for contamination. It has been paying for bottled water and water treatment systems while searching for a long-term solution.
In March, Tyco announced it would pay for a municipal system, but did not provide any details. But in a letter sent to residents in the area within the last week, the company says of the six options it examined, joining Peshtigo to Marinette’s supply is the best choice.
“This option best meets every criteria in our situation. It would allow for a reliable and monitored the long-term source of water for the residents in the sampling area. It is a solution used elsewhere and would take a relatively short amount of time (two years) to implement,” the report states.
“We would not select a solution simply because it was the fastest, cheapest, or easiest for the company to implement,” said Tyco’s Jim Cox. “As you may know, Tyco will also fully fund all capital costs associated with constructing and installing the water lines.”
The other options it reviewed were:
Maintaining POET systems on the existing private wells;
Drilling and maintaining individual deep private wells;
Establishing and maintaining a new Town of Peshtigo Public Water System;
Establishing and maintaining a new Town of Peshtigo Sanitary District;
Providing different water supply methods to different residents
The letter does not provide any costs estimates for any of the options. The company says a new system could be in place by the end of 2020.
