APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – “Stand up fight back!” That was just one of the handful of chants said during a “Stop the Bans” rally on Tuesday.
People stood along College Avenue in front of Lawrence University’s Memorial Chapel.
“I support abortion. I think that we… that keeping abortion safe and legal is a surefire way to save lives. Especially women’s lives,” said Juan Marin of Appleton.
Abortion is a topic that has created strong opinions. Especially since some recent bills restricting abortion passed in other states.
Some people agree with a woman’s right to choose.
“It’s our bodies, things happen. We need to have rights,” said Deb Silvers of New London.
Other people say a human’s life begins at conception.
“Human beings should be fully protected from conception. That this is an individual life and the pre-born child obviously has rights. The right to life,” said Matt Sande legislative director/deputy state director of Pro-Life Wisconsin.
Lawmakers on both sides are also weighing in on the debate.
“At some point, I think we have a duty to protect a child even inside a mother’s womb,” said Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wisconsin.
Presidential hopefuls like Sen. Bernie Sanders shared his thoughts about new abortion laws passed in some southern states.
“These laws are dangerous. They are regressive and they are blatantly unconstitutional,” said Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vermont.
No matter what side you’re on, it’s clear the debate isn’t slowing down anytime soon.
In Wisconsin, Democratic Gov. Tony Evers said he would veto a recent anti-abortion bill passed in the Assembly.
