APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – More apartments may be coming to downtown Appleton.
The Community and Economic Committee voted in support of two housing development proposals Wednesday night.
With restaurants, stores, and entertainment all in walking distance, Danielle Maurer told FOX 11, downtown Appleton would be a nice place to live.
“I just think there’s more nightlife here and people are more attracted to the city and downtown area.”
Maurer hopes to see more housing projects in the area.
“I think that both these developments will be keying in not only millennials but baby boomers,” said Karen Harkness, the city’s director of community and economic development.
Harkness tells FOX 11 baby boomers are looking to downsize. She added that living in apartments will help with maintenance.
“Both of these proposals will help us meet our goal outlined in our comprehensive plan of 450 residential unit in our central business district between 2016-2021.”
Fore Development is proposing a $6.2 million, 36-apartment unit.
The project encompasses properties on Washington and Durkee Street.
Fore will tear down three buildings currently home to Appleton Rock School. Developers say don’t worry because the school already has a new location.
Fore is asking for public assistance of about $736,000.
“Both these developments are located in Tax Incremental number 11,” said Harkness.
The second project by Tadych Investment Partners is asking for about $1,000,000 of public assistance. Harkness says developers plan to purchase the former bank from Lawrence University.
“Tadych is doing a mixed-used project with 28 apartments and 2,600 square feet commercial space facing college avenue.”.
Tadych expects to invest more than $7 million in its project.
“I think it would be a nice benefit, being able to walk to places, having easy access to downtown and stores,” said Maurer.
The proposals will go to the full common council on June 5th.
If approved, Fore would start construction at the Washington and Durkee street site later this Summer and Tadych would start construction for the College Avenue site early next year.
