APPLETON, WI (WTAQ) – The World Health Organization has classified ‘burnout’ as an official medical diagnosis. A supervisor with Thedacare Behavioral Health is applauding the move.
Chris Matula says everyone has feelings of exhaustion, job negativity, and reduced efficiency from time to time.
“When does it cross the line? It’s when it starts affected not only in your work but also your life.”
At that point, action needs to be taken.
“That’s when something needs to be done about it or it’s only going to get worse.”
Matula recommends taking your issues right to the top.
“I would recommend that they speak with their leader or supervisor and make sure that they know what’s going on.”
Matula says that could mean simply getting more rest, or exercise in your life.
“Employee assistance programs are also a great option. They’re available and available quickly for people in the workforce.”
The good news is Matula believes most employers are aware of the burnout issue and the W-H-O action reinforces it.
The diagnosis is limited to the work environment. Not applicable to other life situations.
