DE PERE, WI (WTAQ) – The debris left behind at the cite of fire in downtown De Pere last month is slowly being sifted through.
It may feel like a long wait, but De Pere Fire Chief Alan Matzke says they need to take their time to make sure the job is done right.
“They are beginning to move that stuff around, and really when that building collapsed, everything just kind of fell in upon itself and so they need to remove that systemically layer by layer.”
Matzke says crews are beginning to look for information on the location of where the fire started and how it started. In the meantime, insurance questions are being raised.
“Now it becomes a discussion between insurance companies.”
The big question, who is going to pay, one of the businesses or the building owner?
He says the cause and origin of the fire may help in figuring that out.
He says that the mining process could take a few days, but the entire process all the way through hauling the debris away could take until mid-summer.
“It might be into the end of July before we see that totally cleaned up,” Chief Matzke said.
