GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – After almost two months of extensive rehab, Green Bay K-9 Officer Pyro is returning to the force in full-duty.
Pyro was stabbed multiple times in the neck during a disturbance call on April 7.
After multiple surgeries and hours of hard work, Pyro got the thumbs up from veterinarians on Thursday that he’s back to 100 percent.
“We got the clean bill of health and we’re back out on the road and doing everything that we were doing before the injury,” explains Officer Scott Salzmann, Pyro’s handler.
The community has helped raise thousands of dollars for Pyro through GoFundMe pages and events.
“We want to thank everyone that was out there for all the super support and prayers and thoughts and cards and letters that everyone has given us to get Pyro back in business,” explains Green Bay Police Chief Andrew Smith.
Sai Vang, the man accused of stabbing Pyro, was found incompetent to stand trial on Thursday.
Vang faces three charges, including a felony charge of causing injury to a police animal.
Vang repeatedly apologized for stabbing Pyro during questioning, but said, “he stabbed the dog on instinct, because he is scared of dogs,” according to the complaint.
