SHAWANO, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – With the start of June, more and more people are looking to get outdoors.
This weekend we saw rain and sunshine. It’s a mixture that could be producing more mosquitoes in the months ahead.
As Brian Zahringer fogs one problem area you can see the mosquitoes scatter.
“The mosquitoes took a little longer to get here because it was cooler, but now that they’re here they’ve just kind of exploded,” said Zahringer, the general manager of Ewert Pest Control based out of Shawano.
Shawano resident Eddie Michaletti tells FOX 11 he agrees with the pest experts.
“They’re worse than bad, they’re terrible. Worse than I ever have seen them in the 8 years I’ve lived here.”
Zahringer tells FOX 11 you could be seeing more of the itchy, bloodsuckers this summer.
“All the snow at the end of the year and the extreme fast melt of it…it woke up a lot of mosquito eggs. They’re going to hatch and they’re going to breed.”
Standing water is a breeding ground for mosquitoes and those who live by water or areas that flooded could be seeing a lot more of them.
Michaletti says mosquitoes are already sucking the fun out of the warmer weather.
“Ten to fifteen minutes playing with my dog over there on my bench and you got to get up and move or else you get bit up.”
If you’re already looking for relief, Zahringer says to keep your grass short and your backyard dry.
“If you have anything in your yard that holds water dump it out because they’re going to breed in it.”
Mosquitoes can carry diseases. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends treating areas where mosquitoes rest. And make sure to have screens on your windows in your home.
