GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – The official first day of summer is 9 days away but that’s not stopping Green Bay’s Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department from kicking off its playground program.
The parks department says there will be a number of organized activities, special events, games, and sports.
“Parks are the place to be. Of course, you’re talking to the parks guy so it’s… I love it,” said James Andersen, recreation superintendent.
He tells FOX 11 park attendance has increased over the last five to 10 years and points toward why.
“I think it goes along with a lot of the partnerships that we have, a lot of the community outreach that we do. We look at ourselves as, kind of, that all-inclusive place for people to go to.”
On Tuesday, kids were enjoying the park.
“They have the little twisty slide. It… like goes around and around,” said 7-year-old True Anderson.
“I like to go on that red thing with the triangles and I like to go down the slide,” said 6-year-old Carma Miller.
“I like to go on the swings,” said 5-year-old Amiyah Sloan.
Andersen shares what this year’s playground program has to offer.
“You can come here and have supervised playground leaders that do activities and events. Everything from sports events to reading programs to running clubs.”
Andersen says there will be 35 staffed locations around the city for the parks program and having staff members at the parks offers quite a few benefits.
“I think it’s important because kids need people to look up to. They need mentors and I think we’re very fortunate in the community to have a program like this.”
The playground program is offered Monday through Friday 11 a.m to 5 p.m.
