GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – Someone is stealing license plates in Green Bay.
Green Bay Police say they have received word on 18 stolen plates since May.
Police Commander Kevin Warych says the fear is the theft crime could lead to more crime.
“Based on our experience, we believe that license plates are often stolen to be put on other vehicles to commit other crimes.”
He says any kind of threat is taken seriously in Green Bay.
“We will see them pop up on gas drive off or in another crime.”
He says they are then able to determine that the plates are stolen, but only if it is reported.
“If your plates get stolen, we want to know about it.
He says if someone has their plates stolen they should contact the police and start the process of getting replacement plates.
Many of the reports have something in common.
“More often than not, the rear license plate is being stolen. Is that because the registration sticker is on there? That is yet to be determined, we don’t know that.”
He says residents should check their cars to make sure their plates are there and report it to police if they are missing.
Also, they should watch for suspicious behavior and keep their cars locked in a garage or under light at night if possible.
