GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – Some major cash is available for local agencies and organizations geared towards crime prevention.
“There’s up to $40,000 available in funding,” explains Jeff Flynt, Brown County Deputy Executive.
The money is coming from Brown County’s Crime Prevention Foundation.
The goal of the foundation is to combat, what they call, the crime triangle.
“You need desire to commit the crime, ability to commit the crime, and opportunity to commit the crime,” he explains.
Leaders of local law enforcement agencies say that this funding can impact their operations in a major way.
“Crime prevention strategies reduce the opportunity for crime to occur resulting in more efficient use of law enforcement resources and ultimately a better community to live and raise a family,” explains Brown County Sheriff Todd Delain. “I encourage citizens throughout Brown County to think of ways to improve neighborhoods and develop or support programs that deter or reduce crime through education, recreation and/or community involvement.”
In order to be eligible for the funding, the non-profit organization or law enforcement agency must first check a few boxes.
“The program or projects primary purpose must be to prevent crime, provide a funding source for crime prevention programs, and encourage the public to report crime,” explains Flynt.
Additionally, individuals are not eligible for funding.
“Some of the past grant award recipients include Crimestoppers,” he explains. “City of De Pere Police got a mobile, handheld, fingerprint device.”
From the counties perspective, there are few things more important than crime prevention.
“Crime prevention measures like these programs can significantly reduce crime while being much more cost-effective than traditional means,” says Brown County Executive Troy Streckenbach. “It’s important we all do our part to help Brown County continue to be a safe and successful place to live, work, and play.”
For those interested in applying, it’s recommended to do so sooner than later.
“The deadline to apply for these grants is coming up quick, it’s July 1,” says Flynt. “So you still have about a couple of weeks to put in your application.”
