SEYMOUR, WI (WTAQ) – A number of young people were out in the Seymour-area Monday lending a helping hand.
In fact, about 150 volunteers from a youth mission group called TeenServe are spending the week in the area, as they paint houses and take part in construction projects.
Sharon and Ken Blohm say their home has never gotten quite the special treatment in 35-years of living on Factory Street in Seymour.
“It hasn’t. We’ve done some sides here and there, but this is the first time it’s been scraped and started over again,” says Sharon Blohm.
Candy Johns, a crew leader, explains her role in the operation.
“Make sure everybody stays on task, behaves themselves, drinks enough water, takes their breaks. That kind of stuff,” says Johns.
Johns resides in Canal Winchester, Ohio, but for the past fifteen summers, she has been making the venture in order to help.
“I love it. I love coming, meeting new people. We meet new people every year. There’s a lot of the same people that come back every year,” explains Johns.
Others are first-time participants.
“There are some people who can’t do things for themselves. It’s good to help other people,” says Mia Grev, Zimmerman, Minnesota.
Jonathan Kamper was one of the teens helping to paint on Monday.
“For us, it’s just such a simple and practical way, but for them, it’s such a big deal to have their house painted. So it’s just seeing the gratitude that they have is overwhelming,” he explains.
According to volunteers, the Blohm’s house should be done by Friday.
“You go home at the end of the week, it’s not about you. It’s about the people that you meet, people you were able to help,” says Johns.
The group aims to make improvements at 27 properties in the Seymour area this week before they pack up and head out to the group’s next project, which is in Pine Island, Minnesota.
