KAUKAUNA, WI (WTAQ) – The body of a boy was recovered from a pond in Kaukauna overnight.
Police say the 12-year-old was playing with his three younger brothers Tuesday night.
“Rescue personnel learned that four brothers, ages 7, 11, 11 and 12, came to the pond to release a turtle. At one point, three of the boys were in the pond.”
The body of water was a retention pond on the grounds of Lamplighter Apartments.
“One of the boys was on the bank of the pond and observed two of his brothers struggling to swim in the pond.”
The boy yelled for help and a mother and daughter from the apartment building rushed out.
“They heard the boys yelling and one of the women jumped into the pond and pulled out two of the boys, but the third was unaccounted for.
“At this point, we believe the boy was in the pond for approximately 1 and a half to 2 hours before being recovered.
Rescue crews were called to help search for the missing boy.
When they found him, he was taken to a hospital where lifesaving attempts were performed. The child was pronounced dead at the hospital.
“There was signage there, but there is no law that states that there has to be fencing around and there was no fencing around this particular pond.”
The incident remains under investigation.
