GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – With the 4th of July in the middle of the week, many people will be traveling and taking vacations.
The Better Business Bureau is offering safety tips for your holiday vacation.
Susan Bach of the Better Business Bureau says extended vacations are more likely, and posting that you are gone on social media, makes you a prime crime target.
“It is really just best to save that until you get home because we don’t want to attract thieves or burglars to your house.”
It is also recommended to check your home insurance if your home will be left unattended. Bach says make sure you know your responsibilities under your home insurance policy.
“Some policies do not cover damage if nobody checks on your for a certain amount of time.”
The BBB also recommends using a traditional paper copy of a map and not just relying on technology like GPS or cellphones.
“A lot of people like to rely heavily on smartphones, but you may encounter some kind of technical difficulty.”
Bach says that could include loss of battery power or lack of cell reception.
Other tips include traveling with someone, using a hotel safe to secure valuables and letting family or friends know your itinerary.
