GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – It’s an old cliche, but one that transportation officials say is true.
“There are two seasons to Wisconsin, winter and construction season” explains Mark Kantola, with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation. “And we’re in the midst of construction season.”
And it only makes sense, considering that the few temperate months each year provide workers the best opportunity to work around the clock on a number of projects.
With that in mind, transportation officials don’t want motorists to get caught off-guard when new work gets underway.
According to Kantola, some additional closures will start today.
“We’re going to be closing the northbound 441 on-ramp from County Highway P,” he says. “From 7 p.m. Monday to early Tuesday morning.”
In fact, ramp closures are picking up all over the area.
“We do have some pretty big closures of ramps in Winnebago and Outagamie County,” he explains.
In Winnebago County, the southbound I-41 on-ramp from Breezewood/Bell will be closed nightly from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m., Wednesday, July 17 and Thursday, July 18.
While in Outagamie County, the northbound I-41 on-ramp from WIS 96 will be closed nightly from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m., Monday, July 15 and Tuesday, July 16.
In this round of ramp closures, the work being done is simple scheduled maintenance.
“But, we also have about twenty state highway projects going on as well,” he explains. “So, there’s pretty significant construction going on everywhere in northeast Wisconsin.”
One important note is that the ramp closures will not have alternate detour routes in place, meaning that motorists are asked to simply utilize the next available on/off ramp.
Because of that, officials are hoping that motorists will plan accordingly.
“The worst thing in the world is coming on and you want to go to your work, or your on vacation, and you get to where you’re supposed to get off and the ramp is closed,” says Kantola.
