GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – The Green Bay City Council unanimously approved the proposal for the SafePark program Tuesday night.
A SafePark voucher will allow people to park overnight in the city between the hours of 3 a.m. to 5 a.m.
Green Bay Alderman Brian Johnson, on WTAQ’s Matt, Earl & The Morning News, explains the gist of the proposal.
“It basically gives them an exemption for one night from the 3 to 5 am overnight parking restriction.”
Johnson says it’s designed to take away at least one reason for someone who had too much to drink to get behind the wheel.
“In the community, we’re making progress, but there’s still a way to go to combat drunk driving.”
The voucher does not override a meter or downtown parking restriction.
They are void during extreme weather.
1. Voucher only works in the city of Green Bay
2. The voucher DOES NOT override any meter or downtown parking restriction.
3. Vouchers are VOID during times of extreme weather, including snow emergencies and flood warnings.
3. With the voucher, you are only allowed to pick your car up by the following evening, before the next restrictive period. Failure to do so will result in a parking ticket.
4. Vouchers cannot be used twice in a 24 hour period.
The Green Bay City Council also voted unanimously in favor of the conceptual plans for the $10 million Shipyard District last night.
It would turn empty land on the Fox River near the Mason Street bridge into a public gathering space — with amenities such as an urban beach, a beer garden, a dog park and a great lawn with space for concerts and festivals, to name a few.
Local businesses believe it will have a positive impact on everyone.
It was originally the proposed site for a baseball-soccer stadium, but that was ultimately moved to Ashwaubenon..
If you’re interested in seeing the new plans, an open house will take place at the Farmers Market on Broadway tonight.
